This past November, we were proud to be a part of the Global Startup Battle competition, where thousands of new ideas were launched around the week in the span of just two weekends… and today, we are proud to introduce you to the winners of Global Startup Battle: ConceptKicker – led by Tony Yang, the Co-Founder and Product Owner of ConceptKicker, who sat down with us to tell us more about what they are building with POP:
What was the inspiration that made you start ConceptKicker?
I am a 2D concept artist and illustrator for game companies. Previously I worked on Lord of The Rings, Jurassic Park Builder, Deus EX, and many more. I have a lot of my own designs that I wanted to 3D print and sell. After researching for a long time, I found it was simply too expensive, troublesome, and risky to do this. This was how the initial idea of ‘ConceptKicker’ came to me, it was a perfect solution for my own pain.
Where were you when inspiration hit you (be honest)?
Walking in front of my closet at home, where I stored my 3D printer. I was trying to think up ideas for Startup Weekend and it hit me.
Is it a solo project — or do you have a co-founder, partner, or other team members?
We are a team of 5 right now. There is myself as the product owner, Denny Hollick on marketing and business operations, Shan Shan Fu on business development, Michal Marcis on client care, and Jonathan Zou taking care of the 3D printing and production.
What’s next for ConceptKicker?
ConceptKicker is heading to Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas! CES is one of the biggest technology trade shows in the world from Jan 6-9th, 2015. We will be showcasing our service and the exciting, new products. We also have a lot of new artists and gaming studios jumping on board very quickly – adding on to our current esteemed line-up of personal art from the concept artists of Tron, Assassin’s Creed, and Tomb Raider.
We are also doing a media tour in NYC, going to the Launch Conference in San Francisco, and headed to Milan for the Global Entrepreneur Congress. We hope in the next 6 months we’ll be a we’ll be a well known name to all concept artists.
What advice do you have for others that have an idea that they want to get started?
An idea is only good if you’re taking action on it. Start now, get a lot of feedback, and find the right team – this is key.
